What is the toolkit?

There are 11 learning modules: five core modules aimed at all trustees, four aimed at trustees of DB schemes and two aimed at trustees of DC schemes. Find out more about the modules.

The modules are broken down into smaller scenarios that follow the board of a DB scheme with a DC section as they govern the scheme and attend trustee meetings, dealing with issues, meeting advisers and communicating with members along the way.

As you work through the scenarios you will take part in trustee discussions as a member of the board and your knowledge will be tested through 'decision point' questions. Depending on your answer you may be directed to technical tutorials to learn more about the topic such as risk management and internal controls, default investment options for DC schemes or recovery plans for DB schemes.

Each module has an assessment to test your knowledge which, if passed, is added to your development record. You can download and share your development record as proof of your achievements.

Our video guides you through some updates we made to the Trustee toolkit earlier this year, showing you what to expect once you've signed up for your account.

How should I work through it?

You can study in the way that best suits you.

Online, offline, bite-size chunks, assessment first, module first, in any order you like - it's entirely up to you.

I'm a new trustee

If you're just starting out as a trustee, we recommend you begin with the scenarios in each module. As you answer questions about the topic at hand, you'll be directed to more technical tutorials if you need to learn more about it. We suggest you start with the first module 'Introducing pension schemes' as the later modules expect you to have already studied the basics.

I'm an experienced trustee

If you're more experienced, we recommend you start with the assessments to test your knowledge. When you review your answers, you'll be directed to tutorials to fill specific gaps in your knowledge helping to keep your learning time focused on the areas you need most.
